Do we mean God? No - we mean Dog. Dogs and other p 'As with dogs, so with gods - by and large, you should blame the owners. Dogs and other pets we've been keeping and loving since we began walking on two feet. But why do we love God - and pets - so much when their capriciousness sometimes suggests that they don't love us back? In this wise, witty and highly topical book, celebrated cartoonist and novelist Martin Rowson argues that rationally, the whole enterprise of religion is a monumental and faintly ridiculous waste of time and money.
But then again, so is pet-keeping.

From about half way up to nearly the end, my general reaction to this fairly slim anti-religious rant would have been, in summary, '50p wasted' but it's rescued within sight of the finish with a cracking riff on Douglas Adams' 'fairies at the bottom of the garden' line.

So, good value for 50p in the end. Disappointingly little about dogs, more footnotes than Terry Pratchett and little humour for a cartoonist - but I get the idea he's not 'that' sort of cartoonist. Aug 21, Crawford rated it really liked it. Now, I am a Martin Rowson fan having ploughed my way through Stuff, the highlight of my reading year, and The Waste Land "seen", which awakened me again to the graphic novel. This book is, as he says, a rant. A reference to pets open and close the rant, God and god occupies the middle, and 'how to be human' is a thinly disguised plug for humanism, an ethical form of politics if I understand the rant correctly.
Empathy and The Dog Allusion
I guess the downfall is the pet elephant in the room, the spectre of Dawkins looms l Now, I am a Martin Rowson fan having ploughed my way through Stuff, the highlight of my reading year, and The Waste Land "seen", which awakened me again to the graphic novel. I guess the downfall is the pet elephant in the room, the spectre of Dawkins looms large, and that the rant is entirely reasonable and not polarizing enough to grab a Boston Legal episode, where Danny Crane's pet mad cow inhabited his brain and behaviour.
So, it turns out that there are rules to live life by which are not based on Job's attempt to negotiate appeasement with God, but on some balance between the Golden Rule and the Platinum Rule, sympathy and empathy, Dogs can be Gods and Gods can be Dogs but neither can be humane and nor should they be expected to be. There are few laughs scattered throughout the rant but the author is not a Barry Crump nor a Ronald Hugh Morrieson, and you will know the end is nigh should he become a politician.
Reading the rant I was reminded of Seduction Behaviour: religion, as an example, is a negative behaviour in that you know its wrong but do it anyway, it is self-inflicted in that you do it to yourself and nobody does it to you, there are short term gains and long term punishment; the creed is along the lines that seduction is driven by religion being a people substitute and the treatment for seduction is about people being a religion substitute.
Hmm, perhaps the answer is 42 after all! In this wise, witty and highly topical book, Martin Rowson argues that both religion and pet-keeping are monumental wastes of time. But both enterprises tell us about who we are, which is perhaps a more important question. It carries the prestige of over 47 years of retail experience.
